The Purpose Behind Cancer Charity Foundation
Treatment of cancer is taxing in all respects such as physically, emotionally, and financially. Uganda has a system where most patients have to cover long distances to get specialized treatment centers, which in most cases are located in Kampala. As soon as they arrive there, they face new complications: a lack of a place to live, food, long queues, and new medical systems.
Gilbert Kevin Jimmy Kwizera understood that these are non-medical issues that sometimes dictate whether a patient will ever be able to remain under treatment. Without stability, even the optimal medical attention is not reachable. The gap that CCF was established to fill was precisely this–to bring about a sense of stability when sickness has put a stop to all facets of life.
The Haven: A Space Designed for Dignity
One of CCF flagship programs is The Haven, a well-thought-out place of accommodation of cancer patients who should be kept close to the treatment institutions. The Haven is a response to the real ethos of the work by Kevin Jimmy Kwizera: respect, and care over exposure, control, and dignity over spectacle.
The Haven is meant to be silent, stable and humane. It is not a traditional institution. Rather, it is a sort of temporary house where the patients are able to be in comfort and tranquility. It is now considered that emotional safety is equal to physical shelter.
Through the provision of this space, CCF minimizes stress, fear, and isolation-3 aspects that have strong impacts on the recovery outcome.

Supporting Daily Survival Needs
Cancer suppresses the organism, and the organism is in need of food, cleanliness, and rest. CCF offers meals, clean drinking water and simple hygiene to patients in their care on a daily basis. Such services are not complex as they are important.
Patients come with a lot of malnourishment or they cannot afford food as they await treatment. CCF makes sure that none of the patients will be forced to decide between food and health. This support has the effect of keeping the body physically strong and the mind keen throughout the therapy.
The foundation of Jimmy Kwizera provides the patients with a sense of normalcy and self-respect that is lost in managing a good portion of their lives, by satisfying their daily needs.

Guidance Through Complex Medical Processes
Managing the cancer treatment process is also a confusing affair, in particular to patients who are not used to city hospital operations. Delays and long queues, complicated processes may overwhelm the individuals who are already emotionally drained.
CCF has a critical role to play in helping the patients go through these processes. The use of volunteers and staff to monitor the appointments, clarify the procedures, and to make sure that the patients do not fail to follow the important medical procedures because of confusion or ignorance.
